What' is Joshu's message? Joshu's message is that there is no message: that the world with all its various things is neither "good" nor "bad", neither "holy" nor "unholy" - it is nothing beyond itself. "I go directly to the core of the matter", says Joshu. Repeatedly questioned as to what the core of the matter is, Joshu says that it is "right in front of the eyes": it is "the oak tree in the front garden"; "the leg of the chair"; "the scorched kettle".
